Ts’il Kaz Koh Rapid Housing Project

About this project

Ts’il Kaz Koh (TKK), through the Government of Canada’s Rapid Housing Initiative, will be building four units of affordable rental housing for TKK Members in Burns Lake who are single parents, experiencing overcrowding, live with disabilities/and or health conditions, or who may be at risk of homelessness or experiencing homelessness. This housing project is an important first step toward meeting the housing needs of vulnerable populations in our community.

Since we anticipate there will be more need for these housing units than there are available, we will be using an application-based process to decide who will be moving into the units. This will be done through a thoughtful and thorough assessment process to ensure applicants meet the required eligibility criteria. An existing TKK home recently became vacant. New residents for this household will be chosen through this Rapid Housing Project application process.

The application process is open on Monday, December 13 and closes on Tuesday, January 18, 2022. Tenants will be chosen the week of January 31, 2022.

Frequently Asked Questions

How did this project come to be?

Ts’il Kaz Koh successfully applied for new housing funds through the Rapid Housing Initiative. This is a Government of Canada fund to help address housing needs in communities like ours by creating new and permanent affordable housing units.

What’s the selection criteria and who is making the decision?

Ts’il Kaz Koh will follow a thoughtful and thorough assessment process. Eligibility will mainly be determined through a needs assessment to ensure that members with the greatest housing needs can access affordable housing. This includes single parents, families experiencing overcrowding, individuals with disabilities, individuals with health conditions, individuals at risk of homelessness and individuals experiencing homelessness.

The old Housing Committee, made up of Ts’il Kaz Koh members, has been restruck to review the applications received. Application review will happen the week of January 24, 2022. They will then make a final recommendation to Chief and Council on the tenants that will be selected. Final selection will happen the week of January 31, 2022.

Why was this site chosen?

Due to insufficient housing supply in our community, and the opportunity to secure funding, we had to act quickly to obtain an open plot of land that could be more quickly developed. Unfortunately, this meant the construction and housing site was chosen without adequate community engagement. We assure our Members that this was a one-off situation that required us to act quickly to ensure that we were able to access funding and that the housing project was able to proceed. We aim to do better with future developments to ensure ample and proper opportunities for community input.

How many units will be available?

There will be five housing units available: Four new units that are being constructed for the Rapid Housing Project (three two-bedroom units and one unit with one bedroom), and one existing unit that recently became vacant.

Why is there an application process?

Since we anticipate there will be more need than there are units available, we will be using an application-based process to decide who will be moving into the units. Every potential tenant will be considered on an individual basis to ensure our most vulnerable Members are housed. All applications will be kept strictly confidential.

When will construction finish and when will people move in?

Construction will finish in early 2022. Once each housing unit has passed all inspection requirements, successful applicants will begin moving-in March 2022.

How will Ts’il Kaz Koh involve community input in future projects?

The Rapid Housing Project is one of more housing projects coming to our community. In the future, our current Chief and Council will incorporate best practice such as land use planning and community engagement for new housing.
